Bangladesh are preparing for one of the most significant Test matches in their cricket history after producing a sensational nine-wicket victory over Australia in Darwin, taking a 1–0 lead into the second and final Test in Mackay.

The second Test will be played at the Great Barrier Reef Arena from 22–26 August, with Bangladesh now having the opportunity to secure their first Test series victory in Australia. The match will also make history for Mackay, with the venue hosting a men's Test for the first time.

Historic Victory in Darwin

Bangladesh stunned the cricket world in the opening Test at Marrara Oval, defeating the world's top-ranked Test side by nine wickets and recording their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil.

Australia were bowled out for just 198 in their first innings, with Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud taking six wickets.

Bangladesh responded emphatically with 426, establishing a commanding 228-run first-innings advantage. Opener Tanzid Hasan struck 101, becoming the first Bangladeshi batter to score a Test century in Australia, while captain Najmul Hossain Shanto made 84 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributed 65.

Australia attempted to fight back in their second innings, with Cameron Green scoring 104, but Bangladesh's bowlers maintained control and dismissed the hosts for 284.

Miraz played another decisive role with the ball, while Hasan Mahmud completed a remarkable match with nine wickets overall. Bangladesh were left requiring only 57 runs for victory.

Despite losing Tanzid for a duck, Bangladesh comfortably reached 57 for one in 14.2 overs, with Mominul Haque unbeaten on 30 and Shadman Islam unbeaten on 25, completing a historic nine-wicket triumph.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto described the result as Bangladesh's biggest victory across formats, while Australian captain Pat Cummins acknowledged that Bangladesh had outplayed his team throughout the contest.

Australia Respond Ahead of Second Test

The shock defeat has forced Australia to reconsider their combination ahead of Mackay.

Opening batter Jake Weatherald, who scored 23 and 0 in Darwin, has been dropped. Matt Renshaw has been recalledand is in contention to open alongside Travis Head in the second Test.

Australia's batting will be under particular scrutiny. Marnus Labuschagne scored only 1 and 31 in Darwin, while Cummins admitted after the defeat that the batting unit was not functioning as Australia wanted.

Paceman Scott Boland and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis are among Australia's other selection options as the hosts search for a response.

Bangladesh Prepare With History in Sight

For Bangladesh, the challenge is different. Having already achieved a landmark victory, they must now reproduce that intensity in Mackay.

Bangladesh's move towards a stronger pace-based attack paid major dividends in Darwin. They could receive another boost from Shoriful Islam, who has recovered from the hamstring problem that kept him out of the first Test.

However, selectors face a difficult decision over whether to change the bowling combination that dismissed Australia twice in Darwin. Shoriful has made Bangladesh's ambition clear ahead of the match: the Tigers want to win the series.

Mackay Test Could Define the Series

The second Test begins at 10:00am local time on Saturday, 22 August, at Great Barrier Reef Arena. It will be Australia's first men's Test at the venue and the final match of the two-Test series.

Australia need victory to level the series 1–1.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, need only avoid defeat to secure a historic series victory. Another win would complete an extraordinary 2–0 clean sweep in Australia and potentially rank among the greatest overseas achievements in Bangladesh cricket history.

After Darwin, Bangladesh have already made history.

In Mackay, they have the opportunity to make even more.
