Walsall is set to host its first-ever Bangla Community Day on Sunday, 30 August, bringing together families, community leaders, businesses and performers for a day-long celebration of Bengali culture, heritage and community spirit.
The event will take place at Walsall Rugby Club, Delves Road, from 12 noon to 6pm, featuring cultural performances, nasheeds, family entertainment, traditional food, competitions and activities for children.
Organised by Shongo Shomithi – United Bangla Community, the event is being presented in partnership with headline sponsor Laxmi Jewellers of Walsall.
Details of the programme were announced at a press conference held on 12/08/2026 Wednesday at Voujon Lounge in Darlaston, attended by more than 150 community leaders and guests.
Speaking on behalf of the organising committee were Nazrul Islam and Shahab Uddin. Other speakers included Bobby Verma, Shariful Rahman, Sayeed Abdul Rahman, Bilal Khan, Imam Uddin Ahmed, Mohammad Maruf, Ashraful Wahid Dulal, Kawsar Ahmed, Faruk Uddin, Abdul Shahid and Surath Miah.
Among those attending the press conference were Akhtar Uddin, Shaheen Chowdhury, Abdul Gani Matab, Haji Nur Miah, Councillor Shakir Hussain, Qari Matiur Rahman, Faiz Ullah, Abdul Ahad, Khosru Miah, Monir Ali and Shahidul Islam, alongside many other prominent members of the community.
Bringing the community together
Organisers said Bangla Community Day is intended to be much more than a cultural festival. Its aims include celebrating Bangladeshi culture and heritage, strengthening connections between generations, involving local families and businesses, and creating a shared platform for the wider community.
A particular focus will be placed on helping younger generations connect with their Bengali roots while encouraging greater engagement between the Bangladeshi community and the wider Walsall community.
Nasheeds and cultural performances
The main stage will be hosted by Smash Bengali, with Iksy joining as co-host.
Internationally known nasheed artist Khaled Siddiq will headline the entertainment programme. He will be joined by Yusuf Sheikh, Shammy Ahmed, Emad Uddin and the Shamsudduha Nasheed Group.
Alongside nasheed performances, the programme will feature entertainment celebrating the Bengali language, culture, identity and heritage. Light-hearted comedy and interactive entertainment will also form part of the day's activities.
Activities for children and families
A wide range of family-friendly activities is planned, including interactive games, Bangla Family Fortunes, cultural and heritage displays, traditional food and snacks, competitions and prizes.
Local businesses and community organisations will also have stalls at the event, giving them an opportunity to engage directly with visitors.
One of the major attractions will be a competition offering the chance to win an Umrah package for two people. Organisers said full details of the competition and how to enter will be announced through Shongo Shomithi's official social media channels.
A separate pre-event competition will give 20 families the opportunity to take part in professional family portrait sessions. On the day, Sumyra of Jannat Media Photography will photograph the winning families.
Walsall boxer Hamza Uddin to attend
Walsall boxer Hamza Uddin will attend Bangla Community Day as a special VIP guest, accompanied by his brother Yusuf Uddin.
Organisers believe their presence will add further appeal to the event, particularly for young people, with the brothers seen as positive role models for the local community.
Support from three mosques
The organisers said three of Walsall's major Bengali mosques — Jalalia Sunni Jami Mosque, Shah Jalal Mosque and Masjid-e-Usman — have offered their support and prayers for the success of Bangla Community Day.
They said the backing reflects the sense of unity and cooperation among different sections of Walsall's Bengali community.
Other event partners include Channel S as media TV partner, Liquid Print as design and print partner and Ethar Reliefas official charity partner. The Halal Food Shop, Elipos Systems and Urban Housing Group are also supporting the event, alongside a number of local businesses, organisations and individuals.
‘Our main aim is to unite the community’
Nazrul Islam, an organiser with Shongo Shomithi, said the central purpose of Bangla Community Day is to bring Walsall's Bengali community together while passing its culture and heritage on to the next generation.
He said the organisers want children and young people to feel proud of their cultural identity while also strengthening the community's relationship with wider Walsall society.
Bobby Verma, director of Laxmi Jewellers of Walsall, said the company was proud to present Bangla Community Day as it marks 45 years in Walsall.
He highlighted the support the business has received from the Bangladeshi community over many years and said it was an honour to be involved in an event designed to celebrate and bring the community together.
Plans to make it an annual event
Shongo Shomithi – United Bangla Community hopes Bangla Community Day will become an annual fixture in Walsall.
Organisers want to develop an inclusive platform where families, young people, businesses, community organisations and residents can come together each year to celebrate Bengali culture, heritage and community life.
They hope the inaugural event on Sunday, 30 August, will lay the foundations for a major annual celebration and establish Bangla Community Day as a lasting part of Walsall's community calendar.
