BIRMINGHAM, 24 August 2026 — Motorists faced significant disruption on the M6 near Birmingham on Monday morning after a multi-vehicle collision involving four cars forced two lanes of the motorway to close.
The collision happened on the M6 northbound after Junction 5 for the A452 Chester Road at Castle Bromwich, according to reports. Emergency services attended the scene while recovery and clearance operations were carried out.
National Highways reported that lanes three and four of the four-lane motorway were closed between Junctions 5 and 6. At the height of the disruption, motorists were warned of delays of around 45 minutes, with congestion stretching for approximately four miles on the approach.
An update at around 8.34am said the two lanes remained closed and around 1.5 miles of congestion was still affecting the route towards Junction 4A. Traffic was able to move through the remaining lanes while recovery work continued.
The situation improved later in the morning, with all lanes reported clear by 9.38am. Drivers were nevertheless advised that residual congestion would take some time to ease.
The incident caused considerable disruption during the morning rush hour on one of the busiest motorway routes serving Birmingham.
No confirmed information about injuries was included in the latest report.
