His award-winning image, ‘The Golden Burden’, celebrates the dignity of labour, while a second photograph earns international recognition
SIENA, ITALY: Bangladeshi photographer Pinu Rahman has brought international recognition to Bangladesh after winning the prestigious Pangea Prize in the People category at the Creative Photo Awards 2026 in Italy. He also received a Highly Commended distinction in the Documentary and Photojournalism category at the Siena International Photo Awards (SIPA) 2026, marking a notable double achievement on the international photography stage.
The awards ceremony took place on 10 October 2026 at the historic Teatro dei Rinnovati in Siena, Italy. According to published reports, the three competitions associated with the Siena Awards attracted more than 40,000 entries from 163 countries, highlighting the international scale and competitiveness of this year’s event.
Rahman’s winning photograph, ‘The Golden Burden’, captures a Bangladeshi labourer unloading a heavy bundle of raw jute from a river vessel and carrying it on his head. Through the image, the photographer presents a striking portrayal of physical labour, resilience and the everyday lives of working people.
The photograph’s strength lies in its ability to transform an ordinary moment of work into a compelling visual narrative. The labourer’s burden becomes a powerful symbol of the effort and determination that sustain communities and livelihoods. By focusing on an often-overlooked aspect of everyday life, Rahman draws international attention to the dignity of ordinary people and the stories behind their daily struggles.
His second recognised photograph, ‘Bad Morning in a Burned Valley’, received a Highly Commended distinction in SIPA’s Documentary and Photojournalism category. The recognition further demonstrates the breadth of his photographic work and his engagement with documentary storytelling.
The double recognition is particularly significant because the two photographs were acknowledged in separate competitions and categories. Together, they reflect Rahman’s ability to communicate human experiences through different forms of visual storytelling.
Speaking after the achievement, Rahman expressed his happiness and pride at representing Bangladesh on a major international platform. He said that receiving recognition in two categories had strengthened his commitment to telling stories through photography.
The 12th edition of the Siena Awards brings together the Siena International Photo Awards, Creative Photo Awards and Drone Photo Awards. The festival, running from 10 October to 29 November 2026, features exhibitions and activities across Siena and surrounding locations. Rahman’s recognised works are set to feature in the main exhibition, People Sharing All the World, and in the bilingual photography book series Beyond the Lens.
A growing international reputation
Rahman has been practising photography since 2012, developing a body of work centred on people, society, travel and documentary subjects. His approach often highlights the relationship between individuals, their communities and the environments in which they live.
The Italian recognition adds to his growing record of international achievements. Earlier in 2026, he was named Bangladesh’s National Award winner in the Open competition of the Sony World Photography Awards for his photograph Threads of Life.
His continued success reflects the potential of photography to communicate stories that cross geographical and cultural boundaries. By documenting the lives of ordinary people, their work and their surroundings, Rahman brings local experiences to audiences around the world.
For Bangladesh, his latest achievement represents another welcome moment of international recognition for the country’s creative talent. It also demonstrates how images rooted in local realities can resonate with a global audience when they combine strong composition with a meaningful human story.
As his photographs reach international exhibitions and publications, Rahman’s work continues to draw attention to the people and experiences that shape everyday life in Bangladesh. His double recognition at the Siena Awards 2026 marks an important milestone in that journey and reinforces the role of documentary photography in bringing human stories to the world.
