TRAPANI PROVINCE, SICILY — A violent and rare tornado swept through western Sicily, leaving a path of destruction, multiple injuries, and widespread power and transit disruptions across the region. The storm system—which originated from waterspouts offshore before coming ashore between Strasatti and Terrenove—inflicted severe damage on the coastal cities of Marsala, Petrosino, and Mazara del Vallo.
Trail of Destruction
The tornado brought winds powerful enough to overturn vehicles, tear roofs from homes, and snap power lines and trees across the Trapani province.
Marsala: Extensive damage was reported at the Alcide Gasperi school, where high winds blew out windows and caused partial ceiling collapses. Staff safely evacuated students to secure zones, though several children and adults sustained minor injuries from flying glass and debris.
Petrosino: In Petrosino, the tornado damaged multiple residential properties, destroyed a local house, and struck the municipal waste-collection center. Rescuers assisted a couple after high winds hurled their vehicle into a ravine; both individuals were hospitalized in critical condition.
Emergency Response and Infrastructure Impact
Emergency services and Civil Protection crews were dispatched to secure damaged structure sites, clear mud and fallen debris from roads, and assist displaced residents.
Transit: Rail traffic between Trapani and Castelvetrano was suspended by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) to allow crews to clear fallen structures and repair damage along the tracks.
Relief Efforts: Local officials in Petrosino activated the Municipal Operations Center to arrange temporary shelter for families left homeless by the storm. Regional President Renato Schifani announced that emergency funds would be allocated immediately to support recovery efforts.
Climate Warnings and Unprecedented Force
Head of Sicily’s Civil Protection Service, Salvatore Cocina, described the event as nearly unprecedented for the island, noting that the severity was comparable to violent storms rarely seen in living memory in the Mediterranean. Authorities noted that extreme summer heat accumulation likely fueled the severe autumn atmospheric instability.
Weather advisories for heavy rain and potential thunderstorms remain active across western Sicily as emergency teams continue damage assessments.
