BIRMINGHAM, UK — Birmingham Airport has introduced a new contactless facial-recognition system at its UK Border Force e-gates, marking a significant development in the way eligible passengers enter the United Kingdom.

The new technology allows eligible travellers to pass through immigration without placing their passports on an electronic scanner. Instead, cameras capture a live image of the passenger’s face and compare it with verified passport, travel and immigration information.

The UK Home Office confirmed on 20 October 2026 that contactless e-gates are now available at Birmingham Airport. The system is part of a wider government programme to modernise border controls and make the arrival process faster and more convenient.

British Passport Holders to Benefit First

Initially, the new contactless system is available only to British citizens who are eligible to use e-gates. The government plans to extend access to other nationalities already eligible to use the automated gates in the coming months.

According to the Home Office, testing indicates that the new technology could make the e-gate process up to 25 per cent faster than the existing passport-scanning method.

The government expects contactless e-gates to be available at all UK airports that operate e-gates by early 2027.

Passengers Must Still Carry Their Passports

Despite the introduction of facial recognition, passengers must continue to carry a valid passport when travelling.

If the system cannot verify a passenger’s identity, they may be asked to scan their passport at the gate or proceed to a staffed immigration desk for further checks.

Existing eligibility rules for using e-gates will remain in place, and Border Force officers will continue to oversee the process.

A Step Towards Digital Border Controls

The introduction of contactless immigration technology at Birmingham Airport represents another step towards the digital transformation of the UK's border system.

The initiative aims to reduce delays, improve passenger flow and maintain effective immigration and security checks.

For travellers arriving at Birmingham Airport, the new system could mean a smoother experience at passport control, particularly during busy periods.

However, the technology is being introduced in phases, meaning not every passenger will necessarily be able to use the contactless gates immediately.
